The Red Shoes

Here is a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale called The Red Shoes. The characters are lined up to tell the story first you see the poor girl then the cobbler who makes the red shoes, then the rich man who adopts the poor girl and next is the poor girl cleaned up and dressed in new clothes next the her is the rich lady who adopts the poor girl beside her is the executioner who chops off her legs to stop her feet from dancing and gives her wooden feet and last is the poor girl grown up with her wooden feet and crutch it is a fairly gruesome tale hope you enjoy.

I will be doing some much needed work on my showreel so I should be able to post some work more regular.

Here is Ludvig Von Helmet for Monstroville. I finally got myself an animation desk I forgot how much easier it is to draw stuff up on the disk, the last desk I had I made myself it was a bit dangerous with the screws sticking out. Hope you like it.

Pushing Daisies

I drew up these designs from Pushing Daisies I think the show has really interesting characters and I liked the vibrant look of the show. On the left is Emerson Cod beside him is Ned then Charlotte Charles and Olive Snook. I might have another go at designing these characters and some of the others from the show maybe in a different style. Hope you like them.

Yudistira The Legend

Recently a friend of my living in Bali became a father he named his son Yudistira which comes from a Balinese myth I though I would use this story to design up some characters. I gave the main character Yudistira a companion similar to the sculptures of lions from Bali I wanted him to be able to be carried by Yudistira but also be able to become more ferocious. I used some other creatures from sculptures I found from Bali and I also used komodo dragons technically they are not from Bali although they are from Indonesia so I though I would included them. Hope you like them.

Marie's Mother

Here is a character design I did for Monstroville of Edward's little buddy Marie's mother with her little pet a coconut crab. I am really happy with the finished design you can see were Jeremiah Alcorn made his tweaks, Von Kreep wanted her to be similar to Marie Antoinette. It was an interesing character to design, hope you like it. Hopefully I will be able to post more roughs soon.

Monstroville Character

Here is a character design I did for Monstroville he is Marie's dad. In my original rough I had a load of sea creatures attached to his back which were taken out they were slightly over the top. Jeremiah made some execellent tweaks to the character and Von Kreep had some great ideas so the character ended up with a steam punk shoulder and a hand that turns into a cannon. Hope you like them.

The Spirit in the Bottle Character Designs

The Spirit in the Bottle is a fairytale about a Woodsman who saves all his money and puts his son through school, but before his education is finished the money runs out. The son borrows an axe from the neighbours and joins his father to earn more money, while the father is resting the son finds a bottle in the forest. He opened it, and a spirit sprang out and declared she would break his neck. The son said first he had to see that the spirit really came out of the bottle so the spirit went back in to show him, and the son closed the bottle again. The spirit begged him and offered to make him rich. The son thought it was worth a risk and he opened it. The spirit gave him a bandage that would cure all wounds and a stick that would turn iron to silver. He tried the bandage by cutting a tree and using it, and it worked. He turned the axe to silver, and it bent on a tree. He persuaded his father to come home with him, because he did not know the way, and sold the silver for far more money than was needed to repay the neighbour for the axe. He went back to school and became a famous doctor. I wanted the father to be a bit of a bruiser as I would imagine you would want to be tough enough to do the job but I did not want him to look mean. I made the son a falconer to elude to the boy being sent to Saudi Arabia to be educated to be a doctor as surgery was developed to a high degree in the Arab world. I want the spirit to look vicious as she does threatens to snap the boys neck. I hope you like them.

Bearskin Character Designs

Here are some character designs I did for a Grimm brothers fairytale called Bearskin. I thought I would set it in Russia. It is about a soldier who comes home from a war and is homeless and a demon in a coat appears to him and tells him if he does not cut his hair or clip his nails for seven years he would make him a wealthy man the soldier takes the deal and the demon gave him the coat and tells him he would find its pockets full of money and a bearskin, telling him that he had to sleep in it and would be known as Bearskin because of it. He gave most of the money to poor people and they would pray for him, After a few years he overhears an old man telling a story of how the innkeeper is going to throw him in prison so he paid the old mans bill and gave him a purse of gold. The old man offered to let him marry one of his daughters the two older sisters are disgusted by him but the youngest sister agrees and Bearskin gives her half a ring as a promise. After the seven years the man cleans himself up and comes back and the youngest sister does not recognise him so he put the other half of the ring into a wine cup and then she realise who he is. The first character is the demon and then Bearskin next is the soldier cleaned up next is the youngest daughter next is her father next to him is the eldest daughter and last is the middle daughter. I hope you like them.

Water Nixie Character Designs

Here are some character designs that I did for a fairytale called Water Nixie, I wanted to use one of the lesser known fairytales. Its about a sister and brother who fall down a well and a Nixie catches them and to escape the girl threw a brush which became a mountain with thousands of spikes the boy threw a comb behind them which became a mountain with thousands of teeth by the time the Nixie gets through the mountains the children get away. The Nixie is a water spirit from Viking mythology so I tried to make them look Norwegian. I thought I would post the scribbles for the characters, I hope you like them.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Character Designs

Hi, here are the Character Designs of the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. First is Mr Poole, he is Dr. Jekyll’s butler. I wanted him to look snobby and stern like he runs Dr. Jekyll’s house like a drill sergeant. Like he was from an order of butlers and its not just a job for him. Next is Utterson, a lawyer and friend to Dr Jekyll. He is trustworthy and calculating. Next from Scotland Yard is Inspector Newcommen. He starts investigating Dr. Jekyll after Sir Danvers Carew’s death. I made him all the one colour because his whole life is about the thin blue line. To his right is Mr Hyde. I tried to make him look disgusting looking and a bit crazy and mindless. Next is Dr Jekyll, he is holding the potion that changes his life. I tried to make him look the opposite to Mr Hyde, I tried to make him look like a nice guy and a bit of a push over. Next to him is Sir Danvers Carew. A kind old man and important member of parliament, Sir Danvers is the father of Dr Jekyll's fiancee and Mr Hyde tramples him to death. Last is Richard Enfield, he is a lawyer and Mr Utterson’s friend he is the one who reveals that Mr Hyde is Dr Jekyll’s heir. I wanted to make him blue so he looks like he is affected by living in foggy London. Well, I hope you like them.

Here is some Little Shop of Horrors character designs I have done I tried to get a likeness to the characters in the film and still make them look like they could be in an animated cartoon . First on the left is Mr. Mushnik's who owns the flower shop that Seymour Krelborn works in next is Seymour Krelborn who raises Audrey II the flower which he is holding as a baby next is Audrey II grown up and looking for more people to eat next is Audrey the object of Seymour’s affection next to her is Audrey’s boyfriend Orin Scrivello who is a dentist. They were interesting to draw I hope you like them.

Here are some character designs I did for the Frog Princess first is the king next to him is the prince who turns into the frog next to him is the princess who is holding the frog on a lily pad and next to her is the wicked fairy who turns the prince into a frog. Hope you like it.

Children of Lir Character Designs

Here are the Children of Lir character designs I have done they took a bit longer to do than normal but there where a few more characters to do this time.
Children of Lir is an Irish story. Lir’s wife Aoibh dies but because she is immortal so she will only be away for a while she worries about the children and they miss her a lot so Bodb Dearg who wants to become the leader of the Tuatha Dé Dannan which where Irish fairies sends Lir his second daughter to marry she become jealous of the children’s love for there mother and turns them into swans Lir is disgusted by this and searches for the children but can’t find them, they are cursed to spend three hundred years on three separate islands the curse is broken by a druid after nine hundred years and then the children reappear but they are really old and decrepit.
In the first image there is Aoibh she is the children’s mother then next is Lir who is a sea god so I gave him some scales and gills then there is Bodb Dearg, Dearg which in Gaeilge is The Red. Next is Aoife she is Bodb Dearg’s second daughter I wanted to make her sneaky and a bit of a schemer and last is Druid Quimlan when he rings the bell the curse on the children is broken I wanted to make him look like Lir had sent him to break the spell so I gave him blue hair and put a wave motif around the sleeves of his top.
The next image is Lir’s children when they are young, first is Aodh he is the eldest and wants to be a warrior next are the twins Conn and Fiachra they want to be hurling stars (which is an Irish sport) next is Fionnuala who wants to be an alchemist.
The third image is when the children are turned into swans I wanted to use there hair styles and there colours to distinguish them from each other.
The Fourth image the children as old people I wanted the two eldest children to look a lot older then the twins. Hope you like it.

Jack and The Nanobot Beanstalk

Here are some character designs I did of Jack and the Nanobot Beanstalk. I set the story in the future and the beanstalk is created by nano technology, Jack brings the Milk a Tron 4000 down to the market and he trades it for the Nanobot Beanstalk which Jack’s mother is not too pleased about. The first image is Jack’s mother next to her is the Milk a Tron 4000 then it’s the chicken that lays the golden eggs then it’s the harp who conducts himself and then it’s Jack as he is very lazy and doesn’t want to walk anywhere he has wheels on his shoes and a rocket pack on his back, he is holding the orb with the nano technology which becomes the beanstalk. I wanted Jack to look like he is not the sharpest tool in the box. The next image is of the giant and his wife who doesn’t want him to eat Jack. It was fun to draw the giants. Hope you like it.

Here are the Hansel and Gretel character designs I did. I see the stepmother as the real villain of the piece, she is starving Hansel and Gretel behind the fathers back to try to force them to leave the house so I wanted to make her like a nasty piece of work and I wanted to make the witch look really horrible because after all she is trying to eat Hansel and Gretel. I wanted to give her a pet and I thought a wild boar would suite her, also I wanted to make Hansel and Gretel look hungry. On the left is the father who is unaware of what is going on around him next is the stepmother then it’s Hansel and Gretel the second image is the witch with her wild boar. Hope you like it.

Here is goldilocks and the three bears character concepts. On the left is goldilocks then honey T bear next to her is her son teddy T bear and his father Grizzly T bear. The story is set at a truck stop goldilocks sneaks into the bears house while the mother and father are at work and teddy is playing baseball outside. I wanted to portray goldilocks as a spoiled brat who turns her nose up at everything and destroys the bears house. Hope you like it.

While I am looking for work, I am setting myself some challenges to get better at character designing. I'm trying to do designs from different stories, I'm starting with Little Red Riding Hood I've set the story in the 1950's the wolf has just robbed a vacuum salesman so that he can trick the granny into letting him into her house. The first image are designs of red riding, her mother and father, and her grandmother. The second image are designs of the wolf and the woodsmen and the third image is the process of how I draw up the image I start of with scribbles in my sketch book then I rough the drawing up more and then finish it in flash.
